Ibrahim Abumsmar is an artist specializing in minimalist sculpture with a sociopolitical message. He hails from the Asir, the mountainous southwestern region of Saudi Arabia. After participating in exhibitions in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Qatar, Italy and Istanbul, Ibrahim is now completing a two-month residency at the Cité des Arts in Paris.
For a freedom- and art-hungry Saudi artist, Paris is heaven. What is especially enticing about a Western city is the freedom of expression the artist enjoys in public space. Ibrahim was thus pulled out of his studio into Paris’ streets and squares. His desire to confront Parisians and the tourists visiting the city with his artistic practice led to a number of interventions in the city which will be depicted in this exhibition, alongside some artistic projects which he has embarked upon during this particularly fertile residency.
The Window exhibition space in the 10th arrondissement of Paris is the ideal place for this show: The Window’s mission is to facilitate experimental interaction of international artists with the Parisian public. Ibrahim will be building up the exhibition and working in the studio space of The Window, during the week prior to the exhibition. The exhibition will open on Friday 27 September at 6 pm, and remain on view in presence of the artist during the weekend, Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 September, from 10am to 8pm.

Un Artiste Saoudien à Paris
Ibrahim Abumsmar est un artiste spécialisé dans la sculpture minimaliste à caractère sociopolitique. Il vient de l’Asir, la région montagneuse du sud-ouest de l’Arabie Saoudite. Après avoir participé à des expositions en Arabie Saoudite, à Dubaï, au Qatar, à Istanbul et en Italie, il est en train de terminer une résidence de deux mois à la Cité des Arts à Paris.
Pour un artiste Saoudien assoiffé de liberté artistique, Paris est une aubaine. Un trait particulièrement attrayant des métropoles occidentales est la liberté d’expression dans l’espace publique. C’est ainsi qu’il abandonna le confort de son studio pour sillonner les rues, les places et les musées Parisiens afin de confronter les passants avec ses projets artistiques. Les résultats de ces interventions ainsi que les projets artistiques fruits de cette résidence particulièrement productive seront montrés dans The Window, au 41 rue du Faubourg St Martin dans le 10e arrondissement de Paris.
The Window est un lieu idéal pour cette exposition. Elle fut fondée par Catherine Baÿ afin de faciliter les expérimentations d’artistes français et internationaux soucieux d’engager un dialogue avec l’espace public Parisien. L’artiste transférera son studio ici pendant la semaine avant le vernissage, qui a lieu le vendredi 27 septembre de 18 à 21 heures. L’exposition restera ouvert, en présence de l’artiste, pendant le weekend : samedi 28 et dimance 29 septembre, de 10 à 20 heures.
